Weakfish – Where have they Gone?

Weakfish – Where have they Gone?

Thought to be the most beautiful fish to visit the New England coast, weakfish are now a distant memory. Yeah, New England is at the northern end of their range. So, they never were constantly up here.  Good years and bad years, up and down. Still this is nuts. They have been absent for two decades. Sure a few occasionally pop up in places like Peconic Bay, sitting deep. But don’t let that fool you. Weakfish are a ghost. Where have they gone?

At this writing, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission has declared weakfish depleted since 2003. And it’s not overfishing – recreational or commercial. The biologists had concluded that weakfish are experiencing high levels of natural mortality, preventing stock recovery. But exactly why are they not making it to maturity? Predation? Habitat destruction? Pollution? Climate change? All of the above? It’s a mystery that needs to be solved.

Good Weather for Tying Flies

Good Weather for Tying Flies,

Been cold and windy lately. A few morning were in the single digits and a few days sported winds near 30.  And yes, there has a been some snow and ice too. Good weather for strong black coffee and aged Irish Pot Still whiskey. Good weather for tying flies.

Where a Channel Joins a Flat

Where a Channel Joins a Flat

When fishing a flat be sure to check out wherever the flat joins a channel, especially on the first of a rising tide. Fish that dropped off the flat during low water are apt to be sitting in the channel awaiting the tide’s return. As it does, they will find low spots in the flat and ride back up.

There are Places I’ll Remember

There are Places I’ll Remember,

Do you love John Lennon’s song  “All my Life”? I do. It sparks remembrances.

This photograph does it for me too. I took it over 25 years ago as I was walking off the beach after a night of fishing.  Its a June morning, about 4AM. Yes, there are moments when the world seems utterly perfect.  Silent, still, endless, and eternal.

A Size 24 Bead Head Caddis Pupae

A Size 24 Bead Head Caddis Pupae

No fun tying these itty bitty babies. Used Veevus 10/o thread; I had too. Still I wanted a few of these in my vest. Increasingly it seems our heavily pressured streams are populated with learned trout. Trout that have been around the brook a time or two.
