Tarpon on Fly Rod Poppers

2/0 Popper

2/0 Popper

Jumped a tarpon this morning. It hit a 2/0 popper. Wild strike. I saw the tarpon come rocketing up from the bottom, like a silver bullet. It took the fly and leaped, almost in a single motion. Never had a chance to really set the hook.

I’m going to try poppers, again, but I can see that hook sets will be a issue. Its not only the force of the strike. As the tarpon come up, its pushing the popper away, creating slack in the leader. Subsurface flies are easier to drive home. And even with them, there is no guarantee.
