Beaches connect us to the Universe

Rhode Island Dawn

At Dusk and Dawn, a Beach connects you with the Universe

Creeks and ponds are sanctuaries for anglers. Here in a safe way, we connect to an elemental world. Oceans are different. Dwarfed by their endless horizons, and the eternity of the tides, we sense our own mortality. Yes, oceans are risky. Still, we love them. For at dawn and dusk, a beach becomes a bridge to the universe.

On the Flats

On the Flats

On the Flats

I’ve been off the water for over a week. A writing assignment deadline, and a kitchen upgrade have eaten up my time. But this morning I was on the flats. Only got in a few hours, before the wind and rain pushed me home. Plenty of casting, but very little catching! Still it felt great to be fishing.

Plum Island New York is for Sale?

Before reading this, I suggest reading the post I did on Plum Island back in September 29, 2011. For the record, I’m referring to the 3 mile long, 843 acre, island sitting just off Orient Point, NY, at the eastern end of Long Island Sound. (recent update)

Plum Island, New York

Plum Island, New York is for Sale

Five years ago, Congress decided to shut down this animal disease research center, and relocate it at Kansas State University. Well the wheels of government turn slowly, but a few days ago the General Services Administration and Department of Homeland Security released a “record of decision”. This is a final step in preparing government property for sale.

As we inch closer to the island’s sale, conflicting opinions have arisen on the island’s future use. Should it be sold to developers for high ticket homes? Should we give it to Hannibal Lector? Just kidding! Or should it become a nature preserve/park? I believe the latter, as should any angler or boater that loves Long Island Sound. The Environmental Protection Agency leans that way too.

Whatever the use, we need reassurances that the island is actually safe. Huge amounts of contaminated soil have already been removed from the island’s landfills. And a study was done under the National Environmental Policy Act. Regardless, more study is likely required before the public roams around out there. Let’s lay all the cards on the table.

Photography: It’s a Brave New World

Back when I was in grad school, seeking an MFA, we jabbered nonstop about different films, different developers, different papers, toners, the secrets of the Zone System. Black & White photography was the gold standard. Darkrooms were sacred caves.

Now everything is digital. Sure some dudes still hang on to the good old days. They are the same folks who love vinyl records. Truth is digital photography is far more versatile, far better. You have many more creative options; options that no darkroom offers.

Where’s all the trays and chemicals?

Accepting the present may require courage. But one has to grow, learn, and adjust. And we all need to understand the tools of our time. Don’t hide in the darkroom. LOL

Storms: Wildness from Above

Storm chasers. Following tornados, in vans full of high tech gizmos? Crazy bizz. Still I feel their zeal. Wild weather is exciting. Suddenly the planet turns with all its might. Your vulnerability is as plain as day. Nature at full throttle. It yanks you by the short hairs.

Last night I was heading down route 41 through Punta Gorda, seeking a Guiness. In the rear view mirror, a storm appeared right on my tail. Inky and angry.

I only have four cylinders, but I out ran the beast noir. A flock of birds raced across my windshield. They were seeking shelter too.  Goodbye storm, you won’t see me again.
