A Rainbow in the Maumturks

I saw a rainbow today. It got me thinking about one I saw in Ireland, years ago. A friend of mine had rented a house in a remote valley in Joyce Country.  Situated 4 miles in on a dirt road, the house hung on a hillside in the rugged Maumturks. Possessing a stark beauty, the valley and surrounding mountains held a haunting aura that is difficult to describe.

I arrived in late winter for a short stay, and soon fell under the valley’s spell. Out my bedroom window, a salmon river coursed the valley floor; while the mountainsides became a kaleidoscope in the changing light of day. Then at night, stars filled the heavens. And without any artifical light for miles, freely they fired down. The universe seemed only an arm’s reach away.

Along with natural beauty, about 300 yards from the house there was a megalithic passage tomb. Untouched since its origins in the neolithic, this long, oval mound of earth held the remains of people that walked this valley in the stone age. If that tomb could talk what stories it would tell.

One morning a storm surged down the valley. It raced through the mountain passes carrying torrential rain. As the storm subsided, I stepped out with my camera. Suddenly a rainbow appeared. It arched out of the sky and greeted the tomb, as if to honor those 5000 year old bones.  I’ll never forget that rainbow in the Maumturks.

Comparing Diablo’s Adios to their Chupacabra

A few weeks back I got a chance to use a Chupacabra. Still got it. If you’re unfamiliar with this craft, its cousin to the Adios. Both are made in Austin, Texas by Diablo Paddlesports. The two look very similar in design, and are constructed and outfitted in the same way. At the moment I have upwards of 2 thousand hours aboard the Adios, and 200 or so aboard the Chupacabra.

At 10.5 feet the Chupacabra is two feet shorter. It is also one inch wider at 37″, and 13 pounds lighter. And this shorter, lighter yak is priced a bit kinder to your wallet as well.

So how does the Chupacabra compare to the Adios? Pretty well actually. I’m catching about the same number of fish, and carrying almost the same amount of gear. Because its lighter, the Chupacabra is easier on-and-off the car, and easier to launch and retrieve. It paddles a bit easier too, at least at startup.

Of course you can’t win them all. The Chupacabra is a stable platform, and I have no problem standing on it. Still in the stability arena the Adios is king. The difference is most noticeable in a chop or crossing a wake. Or if you drink beer while you’re fishing. Just kidding.

Neither craft tracks perfectly when poling or standup paddling, but the Adios is much better than the Chupacabra. Since I do plenty of poling that is a major consideration. And I feel the Adios is tad faster, once you get under way. Lastly, if you are a gear freak or wish to bring a decent size cooler aboard, the Adios is your ride. So all told, for me at least, the Adios still is the right choice.

Back to the Flats

Had a nice trip up north. Fished a day with my son and saw some friends. Enjoyed it. Now its time to get back to the Florida flats. Great conditions today, light southeast winds, very little rain on the way. Found two redfish right off, on a flooding tide. Caught the first one on the 6-weight. The second on the 8-weight. Neither red was very large, but both were fun.

After that came a mix of snook, trout and jacks. Good day on the water. Kept an eye out for tarpon, but didn’t see any. Wish I had.

The Highway

Got an early start heading north. Jumped behind the wheel well before dawn. Its roughly 1500 miles to Connecticut. So this trip will take a few days. I’m staying off I-95 as much as possible, believe me. Hate that road. The inland route is much saner and much prettier. It well worth the extra mileage.

On the Road North

Well I’m climbing behind the wheel in the morning. Not looking forward to this long ass drive. But I need to go north for a week or two. Got some things to accomplish, and some people I want to see.  All and all it should be fun.

As always, I will have a camera on the seat next to me. If I see anything of interest on the ride up. I’ll post a pix.  Wish me luck.
